Jacket Versatility

The temperatures have officially dropped which means it’s time to layer on jackets for the next four to five months. I get bored wearing the same jacket everyday, so over the years my collection has grown (perhaps a little too much for my NYC apartment). There are so many looks you can achieve with different styles of jackets. Even a slightly lighter coat in your collection can be used if you are appropriately layered, so don’t be too quick to write off a favorite jacket of yours this season. Below are a few of my favorite styles that I recommend to spice up your wardrobe.

1. Down Jacket

For the coldest days, a down jacket can really help keep you warm. They don’t have to be big and puffy to be warm. Many companies are now making them fashion-forward. Canada Goose is my go-to jacket when it’s super cold. I know, they’re pretty expensive, but if you invest in one, you really could keep it forever. I used mine maybe 65% of time in the winter. I love that their coats have different warmth levels. For example, their “extreme” style combats 25-degree weather and below. Many of the jackets also have drawcords that make the waist adjustable to accentuate your silhouette and come in a variety of colors and styles. Of course, there are plenty of other great brands out there like The North Face and Uniqlo. Give those a try too!

2. Navy or Black Pea Coat

I love the look of a sleek pea coat. The double breasted design and big lapels provide an element of drama and elegance to your outfit. I like to wear the lapels up to protect myself even more from windy, cold weather. Pea coats are generally a shorter style, giving you a sports jacket look. It also makes you appear longer because it’s a  clean, tailored separation between your torso and legs, which isn’t always the case when wearing super long jackets. This coat can be worn over dress pants or chinos, and looks equally as dapper with a pair of light or dark denim. You know I I love a versatile piece! Layer the coat with your favorite scarf and you will achieve a dapper look that will keep you cozy and warm all winter long.

3. Charcoal Topcoat

Topcoats are slightly lighter and a touch shorter than an overcoat. While both are worn over suits, and an overcoat may keep you warmer, topcoats are some of my favorite pieces for a preppy, layered outfit. Bundling up in a thick sweater layered over a button-down is a great look. Throw a topcoat on over your layers and you instantly have a luxurious, classic look. Charcoal is a color that goes with everything and, in my opinion, is such a classy color. I highly recommend getting this formal-style jacket in a light or dark shade of charcoal.

Bundle up this season in ways that compliment the rest of your outfit and don’t forget to factor in your outerwear when building out your looks. Stay warm out there! ❄️
